The LIFE-Nature Projekt
The "Restoration of Wetlands in the Western Lowland Area of the Dümmer Lake" project was specifically designed for the protection and improvement of breeding and resting habitats in the "Dümmer" European bird sanctuary. The project's aim was to stabilise the stock of a number of species, among them priority species, such as the corncrake and the bittern. The protection of wading birds received special attention.
The main project goals have been
• Rewetting of the fen
• Securing and regeneration of wet meadows providing a habitat for a variety of different species
• Development of wet meadows with tall herbs and reeds on the periphery
With a financial budget of €3,103,000.00, the following tasks were completed between 2002 and 2007:
• Consolidation of extensive wet grassland and reed areas through the purchase of the remaining private agricultural acreage
• Rewetting of the main bog area through damming of the ditches in a 1,200 hectare area while guaranteeing long-term grassland farming
• Integration of the socio-economic environment and comparable other LIFE projects in Europe by means of networking and intensive public relations
